Maximize Your General Conference Experience Tips for Every Learning Style

Maximize Your General Conference Experience: Tips for Every Learning Style

Are you ready for General Conference? I always get so excited the week before Conference.

Today, I want to share some ideas to help you and your family prepare for General Conference  using different learning styles. These tips will allow everyone to engage with the messages in ways that resonate with them, making the experience more enjoyable and personal.

I am predominantly a book and visual learner, so I already have my conference notebook and colored pens ready to go. We also have a family tradition to enjoy snacks and treats while we watch. During the last General Conference, we made a healthy veggie and fruit tray that was a big hit—so we’re planning to do that again.

General Conference and Learning Styles

Individual Learners:

If you enjoy learning on your own, these ideas can help you create a peaceful, reflective experience while watching General Conference.

  1. Create an environment of peace—light a candle, sit in your favorite chair, and take time to watch each talk by yourself if possible.
  2. Prepare a journal or notebook with a question or two you’d like answered and record any thoughts or impressions that come as you listen.
  3. Set a personal goal for how you want to feel after conference, and reflect on it throughout.
  4. Write a letter to yourself about insights you receive, reviewing it later for continued reflection.
  5. Listen to each talk individually throughout the week, focusing on one key point from each.

Social Learners:

If you enjoy engaging with others, here are some ideas to help you get the most out of General Conference.

  1. Gather your family or friends together to watch and share the experience.
  2. Between sessions, discuss what you learned and how it made you feel.
  3. Start a group text to share favorite quotes, impressions, or questions as you watch together in real-time.
  4. Host a gathering with friends and discuss your thoughts after each session.
  5. Post a favorite quote or message on social media, inviting others to share their insights.

Hands-on Learners:

Do you learn best by doing? Here are some creative ways to keep your hands busy while absorbing the messages of General Conference.

  1. Enjoy snacks or treats while watching, using the time to relax and reflect.
  2. Go on a walk and listen while moving your body, allowing the message to sink in.
  3. Build with Legos, cross-stitch, crochet, or engage in another craft as you listen.
  4. Use playdough or modeling clay to create something inspired by what you’re hearing.
  5. Start a puzzle, coloring book, or do a simple DIY project.

Book Learners:

If you love reading and writing, these suggestions will help deepen your experience.

  1. Take notes during each talk, recording key impressions and ideas.
  2. Write a summary of each talk or musical number to fully grasp the meaning.
  3. Read related scriptures or quotes after each talk for enhanced understanding.
  4. Create a bullet-point outline of each talk, highlighting key messages, quotes, and recurring themes.
  5. Make a personal study sheet to revisit the key takeaways later.

STEM Learners:

For those who love structure, logic, and patterns, here’s how you can approach General Conference.

  1. Write down lists or steps that are shared during the talks.
  2. Track recurring themes across talks on a spreadsheet or chart.
  3. Create a flowchart connecting different principles or teachings.
  4. Take notes on your phone or tablet, experimenting with apps that help organize ideas visually.
  5. Listen for numbers or statistics shared during the talks and compare them with numbers from last year.

Music Learners:

Do you feel more connected through music? Here’s how to engage with the musical numbers and talks.

  1. Pay close attention to the hymns and musical numbers—let them elevate your understanding.
  2. Record your thoughts and feelings about how each song enhances the overall message.
  3. Sing along with the music and reflect on how the lyrics reinforce the conference’s themes.
  4. Create a playlist of songs that complement the themes of the talks to listen to during the week.
  5. Close your eyes and feel the music during each hymn.

Nature Learners:

If being in nature is where you feel most at peace, these ideas can enhance your General Conference experience.

  1. Watch the conference outside or near a window to feel connected with nature.
  2. Listen to the talks while on a walk or hike, letting nature inspire your thoughts.
  3. Journal your impressions while sitting near a tree or smelling a flower.
  4. Collect small items from nature (leaves, flowers, rocks) to symbolize lessons learned during the talks.
  5. Go on a drive through scenic areas while listening to General Conference.

Visual Learners:

If you learn best through visuals, these suggestions will help you stay engaged.

  1. Use colored pencils or markers to take notes or doodle while listening to each talk.
  2. Create word art from phrases or key teachings shared during each session.
  3. Make a vision board based on the themes and lessons taught throughout the weekend.
  4. Design a mini poster with favorite quotes or scriptures from the talks to display in your home.
  5. Use a mind map to visually organize the main themes and ideas throughout the weekend.

There are so many ways to enjoy General Conference that align with the way you and your family learn best. Remember, the talks and videos will be available online just a few days later. So, if life happens and you miss a speaker or two (or a session or two), you can still catch up and receive the messages from our living prophet, apostles, and other church leaders.

Enjoy!
