Even a few verses of scripture can have a big impact on your life. Discover why quality is more important than quantity when it comes to study time.
In today’s fast-paced world, it can be challenging to find time for scripture study amidst our daily routines. However, it’s important to remember that there are no set requirements for how much time we should spend studying scriptures. You can have a powerful study with just a verse or two, as it’s the connection with Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost that matters the most.
Every day, study time will look different depending on the amount of time we have. The time we spend studying ebbs and flows during the different seasons of life. Your study time will also look different than your mom, your best friend, or your neighbor down the street. The most important thing is to take the time to build a relationship with Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost.
In the April 2023 General Conference, Brother Milton Carmargo, First Counselor in the General Sunday School Presidency, gave valuable insight into the topic of scripture study. He said, “Could I suggest that you begin by making the words of Christ, found in the scriptures, a daily part of your life? There is no prescribed formula for perfect scripture study. It could be 5 or 10 minutes each day—or more if you can. It could be a chapter or a few verses a day.” (April 2023 General Conference)

In summary, Brother Camargo suggested making the words of Christ, found in the scriptures, a daily part of your life. He also emphasized that there is no prescribed formula for perfect scripture study. It could be five or ten minutes each day, or more if you can. It could be a chapter or just a few verses a day. Permission is given to read only a verse or two or three when that is all you have to give.
It’s comforting to know that even a few verses can make a significant impact in our lives. For example, I recently read about 15 verses of the words of Isaiah in 2 Nephi looking for attributes of Jesus Christ. In just a few minutes, I found attributes like mercy, strength, righteousness, and might that connected and invited me to ponder the Lord’s goodness in my life. On other days, I’ve read just two or three verses, and that is okay. Sometimes I’ve read a chapter or two–It just depends on my day.
