10 Simple Ways to Discover the Attributes of Jesus Christ in Scripture

10 Simple Ways to Discover the Attributes of Jesus Christ in Scripture

How Can I Learn More About the Attributes of Jesus Christ in the Scriptures?

If you have ever wondered how to deepen your understanding of Jesus Christ—His character, His mission, and His love—studying His attributes in the scriptures is a powerful way to start. These attributes reveal His divine nature and provide a pattern for how we can strive to live and love as He does. Here are some practical ways to learn more about His attributes as you read the scriptures:

Identify the Attributes of Christ

Start by making a list of Christlike attributes you want to study. Some examples include love, humility, patience, compassion, obedience, faith, service, perfection, power, justice, order, mercy, and joy. You can find these attributes mentioned in scriptures like in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), in Mosiah 3:19, and the teachings of modern prophets.

Having a list helps you know what to look for as you study.

Use the Topical Guide and Study Tools

The Bible Dictionary, Topical Guide, and scripture footnotes are invaluable resources. For example, if you’re studying “love,” look up verses related to that topic using the Topical Guide or Index. As you read, note how Jesus demonstrated love in His actions and teachings.

You might also use digital tools like scripture apps or online resources that allow you to search for key phrases and cross-reference verses.

Study Stories of Christ’s Life

Some of the most profound insights into Christ’s attributes come from the stories of His life. Read about how He showed compassion to the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11), exercised humility in washing His disciples’ feet (John 13:4-15), or forgave those who crucified Him (Luke 23:34) in the New Testament. You can see evidence of Jesus Christ’s love and compassion in 3 Nephi in the Book of Mormon. You can also hear His voice in the revelations recorded in the Doctrine and Covenants.

As you study, ask yourself:

  • What attribute is Christ demonstrating here?
  • How does this attribute reflect His divine mission?
  • How does this attribute help me build a closer relationship with Jesus Christ?
  • How can I develop this attribute in my own life?
Cross-Reference Old and New Testament Teachings with the Book of Mormon

The Savior’s attributes are evident throughout the Old and New Testaments. For example, His role as a “Good Shepherd” (John 10:11) echoes the imagery of Psalm 23. These scriptures can also be compared to the end of Alma 5. Cross-referencing scriptures allows you to see how His attributes are the same throughout time.

Explore the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants

The Book of Mormon provides unique insights into Christ’s attributes. For example:

POWER: His power to redeem and resurrect is evident in Alma 11:42-44 and 3 Nephi 28:1-10.

MERCY: His mercy is highlighted in Mosiah 26:30 and Ether 12:27.

JOY: The joy of Christ is beautifully expressed in 3 Nephi 17:20-21 when He blesses the children.

PERFECTION: His perfection is taught in 3 Nephi 12:48, where He invites all to become perfect as He is.

The Doctrine and Covenants also sheds light on Christ’s attributes:

POWER: His power is seen in D&C 1:30 and D&C 76:20-24.

MERCY: His mercy is evident in D&C 18:10-11 and D&C 19:16-19.

JOY: Christ’s joy in bringing souls to salvation is noted in D&C 18:15-16.

PERFECTION: The call to follow His perfection is reiterated in D&C 93:20.

Mark Attributes of Christ in Your Scriptures

Marking scriptures that highlight Christ’s attributes can help you remember and reflect on them more deeply. Choose a special way to mark these verses, such as using a specific color of highlighter, underlining with a pen, or adding symbols in the margins. Some ideas include:

Color Coding: Assign a unique color to each attribute (e.g., yellow for compassion, blue for power, red for love, etc).

Drawing Symbols: Use symbols like a heart for love or a star for perfection to quickly identify related verses. You could also draw a smily face for joy or a lightning bolt for power next to verses that highlight Christ’s qualities.

Sticky Notes: Write brief insights or personal applications on sticky notes and place them near the marked verses.

Marking scriptures not only helps you focus on Christ’s attributes during your study but also makes it easier to return to these verses later. This practice can deepen your connection to the Savior as you see evidence of His character consistently throughout the scriptures.

Use the 8 Scripture Study Styles (Learning Styles)

Different people learn in different ways, so consider how your learning style can enhance your scripture study:

SOCIAL: Discuss insights with friends or family.

INDIVIDUAL: Meditate on a single verse or story.

HANDS-ON: Act out a scripture story with your family.

BOOK: Write in a journal about Christ’s attributes and how you see them in your life.

STEM: Analyze patterns in Christ’s teachings and actions.

MUSIC: Reflect on hymns or spiritual songs that teach about Christ’s qualities.

NATURE: Reflect on how Christ’s attributes are reflected in His creations.

VISUAL: Create a visual chart or mind map connecting His attributes to scripture references.

Pray for Guidance and Understanding

Scripture study becomes even more meaningful when you invite the Holy Ghost to guide you. Pray before you study, asking Heavenly Father to help you see and understand Christ’s attributes. Then, as you read, pause to reflect and listen for impressions.

Apply What You Learn

True understanding of Christ’s attributes comes as we strive to emulate them. Choose one attribute to focus on each week. For example, if you’re studying compassion, look for opportunities to show kindness to someone in need. Record your experiences and insights in a journal.

Share What You Discover

Teaching others what you’ve learned helps solidify your own understanding. Share your insights in a church class, family devotional, or even on social media. By sharing, you not only strengthen your own testimony but also inspire others to seek Christ.

Studying the attributes of Jesus Christ in the scriptures is a deeply rewarding journey that brings you closer to Him. By focusing on specific attributes, using study tools, marking your scriptures, and applying what you learn, you can grow in understanding and faith. Remember, this process isn’t about perfection but about progress. As you come to know Him better, you will feel His love more profoundly and be empowered to live as He lived.
