Powerful places to find LORD Almighty in the Old Testament

The Name of Christ, LORD Almighty is found in powerful places in the Old Testament when Jesus Christ announced Himself and His power.

LORD Almighty

LORD Almighty or Almighty are Names of Christ found in the Old Testament 48 times with 31 of them found in the book of Job. Usually Jehovah (the pre-mortal Christ) used this title to introduce Himself to show His power and His might.

Definition: LORD Almighty

Almighty means “having absolute power over all” according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

Similarly, from the 1828 Webster’s Dictionary, Almighty is defined as “possessing all power; omnipotent; being of unlimited might; being of boundless sufficiency.”

In Hebrew, The name Almighty is “Shaddai” (remember the Amy Grant song, “El Shaddai” from the 1980’s) which means “almighty and most powerful” (Brown, Driver, Briggs and Gesenius. “Hebrew Lexicon entry for Shadday”. “The KJV Old Testament Hebrew Lexicon“).

With all of these definitions of Almighty, we find that LORD Almighty has unlimited power and capacity to take care of everything and everyone because He is Omnipotent.

The Lord God Almighty is on our side. He is for us; and who can be against us?” (“The Present Crisis” October 25, 1857, JD 5:368)

3 Powerful Place to find the Almighty in the Old Testament

Numbers

Searching this week’s Come, Follow Me lesson (Numbers 11-14, 20-24), you will find the name Almighty  two times. This is where Balaam blesses the children of Israel (in verse 4) and then prophesies that Jesus Christ, the Almighty (and Star out of Jacob and Sceptre) would be born through descendants of the children of Israel.

Numbers 24:4 -“He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:”

Numbers 24:16 -“He hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:”

Exodus

Jehovah introduces Himself to Moses in Exodus 6 and clarifies that He is the same Lord God Almighty that appeared and made covenants with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Check out the JST (Joseph Smith Translation) because it adds additional clarity to this scripture.

Exodus 6:3 -“And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.”

JST, Exodus 6:3 -“And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob. I am the Lord God Almighty; the Lord Jehovah. And was not my name known unto them?”

Job

In the Book of Job, the name Almighty is found all over. Job repeatedly gave glory to the Almighty, because Job knew He was powerful to save. Time and time again, Job looked to the LORD Almighty despite the many trials and tribulations he encounterd.

Job 22:25-26 -“Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver. For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.”

Job 32:8 -“But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding”

“The Christ declared himself to be the Lord God Almighty, Christ the Lord, the beginning and the end the Redeemer of the world, Jesus the Christ, the mighty one of Israel, the Creator, the Son of the Living God Jehovah.” (“For they Shall See God”, April 1964 General Conference)
