“Why Personal Scripture Study Brings Greater Revelation”
In today’s world, there are so many ways we can supplement our scripture study. Podcasts, devotionals, Instagram posts, study guides, and journals. These tools can all be uplifting and helpful, but in my Seeking Jesus Summit conversation with Becky Squire, she reminded us of an important truth: nothing can replace firsthand experiences with the actual words of scripture.
Becky is a wife, mom of four, seminary teacher, and founder of Latter-day Saint Woman Magazine. She joined me as we talked about why reading the scriptures for yourself is key to personal revelation and spiritual growth.
As Becky shared, “There are so many supplements to scripture study, especially with technology now. It’s such a blessing! But I’ve noticed more and more that people are relying on those supplements more than the actual scriptures. When we do that, we miss the personal experiences and revelation God has for us.”
That message resonated with me deeply. I often remind the women I teach that what is right for one person, or one Instagram account, might not be what’s best for you or your family. Turning to the scriptures first allows God to speak to us individually.
The Power of Personal Revelation
One of the highlights of our conversation was when Becky explained Elder Renlund’s Personal Revelation Framework from the October 2022 General Conference.
In a time when President Nelson has encouraged us all to seek personal revelation, this framework is a powerful guide:
- Revelation will never contradict the commandments.
- You can only receive revelation for those you have stewardship over (“stay in your lane”).
- Personal revelation comes through true sources: scripture, prayer, and the words of living prophets.
Becky explained how easy it can be to confuse others’ opinions or validation for revelation. Staying grounded in the scriptures and prayer helps us hear Him clearly, without distractions or distortions.

Refreshing Your Scripture Study Routine
Another thing I loved from Becky’s interview was her approach to keeping scripture study fresh and engaging.
“I try to find a new way to study the scriptures every year,” Becky shared. “This year, I’m reading the Book of Mormon and highlighting every verse about Jesus Christ in red, and gospel principles in blue. It makes the scriptures come alive and you notice things you’ve never seen before!”
She also reminded us that it’s okay if scripture study looks different in different seasons of life. Sometimes it’s a quiet hour in the morning; sometimes it’s squeezed in between carpool and work. For Becky, putting scripture study on her to-do list helps make sure it happens. “Even if it’s just one verse, it’s better than none,” she said.
Simple Family Scripture Study That Works
For those of us with busy families, Becky offered a simple tip that really works: pick a time and stick to it.
“At our house, we read scriptures at 8:00 pm every night, whoever’s home. Sometimes it’s one verse, sometimes it’s more. If friends are over, they can join in too.”
I loved her reminder that family scripture study doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful. What matters is showing your kids that this is something we do, because it matters.

A Favorite Scripture to Live By
As we wrapped up our conversation, Becky shared her favorite verse: Romans 1:16—“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
She explained how reading that verse as a high school senior shaped her desire to live her faith boldly, no matter what others might think.
That’s such a beautiful takeaway: scripture study isn’t just about knowledge—it’s about transformation.
