Learning from many Faithful Women in the Old Testament

Women in the Old Testament

Did you know there are over 300 women mentioned in the Old Testament?

Many faithful women in the Old Testament are not even mentioned by name, yet each woman can teach us how to come to Jesus Christ and find salvation through Him.

Eve, Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Ruth, Hannah, and Esther are very familiar faithful women in the Old Testament to us. Other women are not as familiar: Abigail, the Wise Woman, and Abishag.

“I am inspired by the lives of good and faithful women. From the beginning of time the Lord has placed significant trust in them. He has sent us to earth for such a time as this to perform a grand and glorious mission.” (“The Joy of Womanhood” October 2000 General Conference)

We can learn important lessons from the faithful women in the Old Testament who faced a variety of trials and circumstances. These women turned to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ in their times of great need. Many of them testified of the goodness of God in hearing their prayers for help. From these faithful women, we can learn how to have faith in uncertain times.

“When you are willing to listen and learn, some of life’s most meaningful teachings come from those who have gone before you. They have walked where you are walking and have experienced many of the things you are experiencing. If you listen and respond to their counsel, they can help guide you toward choices that will be for your benefit and blessing and steer you away from decisions that can destroy you. As you look to your parents and others who have gone before you, you will find examples of faith, commitment, hard work, dedication, and sacrifice that you should strive to duplicate...Learning the lessons of the past allows you to walk boldly in the light without running the risk of stumbling in the darkness…Learning the lessons of the past allows you to build personal testimony on a solid bedrock of obedience, faith, and the witness of the Spirit.” (“Learning the Lessons of the Past”, April 2009 General Conference)

I love learning about faithful women in the scriptures–there are so many of them. As I read and study their stories, I have tried to find personal applications to help me become a better follower of Jesus Christ. With so many unnamed women in the scriptures, I can easily put myself into their stories and learn powerful lessons from each of them.

“The scriptures give us names of several women who have blessed individuals and generations with their spiritual gifts…The scriptures also mention women whose names are unknown to us but who bless our lives through their examples and teachings,” ("The Influence of Righteous Women" September 2009 Liahona Magazine)

“Faithful Women in the Old Testament” is a series of  study guides that focuses on the attributes and characteristics of righteous women all throughout Old Testament times. Women who fulfilled their divinely appointed missions and sought heaven’s help in their time of need.

The “Faithful Women in the Old Testament” series will focus on women all throughout the Old Testament. Each study guide focuses on one woman with the scriptures that tell her story. It also includes the meaning of her name, basic information about her, scripture summaries, “Seek Understanding” questions, “Seek Application” questions, a place for notes and thoughts, plus links to artwork, books, websites, videos, and more.

"No matter our circumstances, our lives are sacred and have meaning and purpose. Each of us is a beloved daughter of God, born with divinity in our souls. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, through His atoning sacrifice, made it possible for us to be cleansed and healed, enabling us to fulfill our purpose on earth regardless of decisions of family members, our marital status, physical or mental health, or any other situation…we can choose to turn to the Savior today for the strength and healing that will enable us to fulfill all that we were sent here to do.” (“Lessons at the Well”, April 2022 General Conference)

We, too, can become great women of faith as we continually point ourselves to Jesus Christ. Through your own personal study, you can learn to apply these same lessons to your own life thousands of years later.

“The Lord especially loves righteous women—women who are not only faithful but filled with faith, women who are optimistic and cheerful because they know who they are and where they are going, women who are striving to live and serve as women of God.” ("Women of Righteousness" December 2002 Liahona Magazine)

"Much of the major growth that is coming to the Church in the last days will come because many of the good women of the world (in whom there is often such an inner sense of spirituality) will be drawn to the Church in large numbers. This will happen to the degree that the women of the Church reflect righteousness and articulateness in their lives and to the degree that the women of the Church are seen as distinct and different—in happy ways—from the women of the world....I stress again the deep need each woman has to study the scriptures. We want our homes to be blessed with sister scriptorians—whether you are single or married, young or old, widowed or living in a family. Regardless of your particular circumstances, as you become more and more familiar with the truths of the scriptures, you will be more and more effective in keeping the second great commandment, to love your neighbor as yourself. Become scholars of the scriptures—not to put others down, but to lift them up! After all, who has any greater need to “treasure up” the truths of the gospel (on which they may call in their moments of need) than do women and mothers who do so much nurturing and teaching?” ("The Role of Righteous Women" October 1979 General Conference)
