Seeking and Finding a Personal Relationship with Jesus Christ This Year

A Personal Relationship with Jesus Christ

What a wonderful opportunity we have each day to seek, find, and build a personal relationship with Jesus Christ this year through our study of the New Testament. Isn’t this what we all truly want—-a personal, intimate relationship with our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ?

Studying the first chapter of Luke, several phrases really stood out. In Luke 1:43, after Mary arrives to visit Elisabeth in Judea, Elisabeth asks, “And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” The phrase “my Lord” exemplified a personal, intimate relationship Elisabeth had been cultivating for many, many years as she awaited the coming of the promised Messiah.

Just a few verses later, Mary expresses her personal witness and relationship with unborn Son when she exclaims, “And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.” (Luke 1:47). In a very special way, Mary knew that Jesus would be her personal Savior–the one who saves and offers redemption, her Deliverer and her Redeemer.

Building a personal, intimate relationship is possible in our study of the New Testament this year. Here are a few, small and simple ways, to begin building a more personal and intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.

6 Simple Ways to Build a Personal Relationship with Jesus Christ

  1. FIND JESUS IN THE SCRIPTURES: Mark the many names of Jesus Christ in a specific color. Study the meaning of each name. Ask: “Why this name of Christ in this story?” (For example, why did Jesus call Himself “Living Water” in the story with the woman and the well?)
  2. STUDY THE LIFE OF JESUS CHRIST: Read or listen to the scriptures about Jesus Christ. Notice how He taught and ministered to His followers. Ask: What does Jesus teach me about His character in these verse?
  3. PERSONALIZE THE STORIES TO MY OWN LIFE: Ponder ways the Savior has taught me in a similar way. Find a way to insert myself into the story by changing pronouns “our” and “their” to “MY”. Ask: How has Jesus showed up for me in my life?
  4. RECORD EXPERIENCES: Notice His hand working in my life each day. Ask: How did Jesus come into my life today?
  5. ACT AND BECOME MORE LIKE JESUS CHRIST: Look for ways each day to respond like Jesus Christ to those I love the most and with those I have contact with each day. Ask: How did I become more like Jesus Christ today?
  6. SPEAK OF JESUS: Take opportunities to “talk of Christ” (2 Nephi 25:26) each day and point others to the Savior of the World.

May we all continue to build a stronger relationship with Jesus so we can proclaim as Nephi, “I glory in plainness; I glory in truth;  I glory in my Jesus, for he hath redeemed my soul from hell.” (2 Nephi 33:6). Jesus in “my rock and my salvation; he is my defence” (Psalm 62:2) and “my Redeemer” (Enos 1:27).
