NATURE (Naturalistic) LEARNING STYLE
The NATURE (NATURALISTIC) LEARNING STYLE or “nature smart”– is the learning style that loves anything and everything out in nature. They enjoy animals, plants, rocks, water, space, and weather. They enjoy beaches, mountains, forests, and jungles. They want to be outside and in nature–camping, fishing, hunting, skiing, boating, hiking and more.

- listen to the scriptures outside–Listen while gardening, mowing the lawn, watering flowers, shoveling snow, or raking leaves. You can also listen to a favorite CFM podcast (several favorites are listed below).
- sit in the sunlight while studying–Find a place near a window, open the blinds, and feel the sunshine as you sit and study
- pay attention to details about nature–notice the descriptive words used to describe things in nature. (For example pay attention to how the trees are cared for in Jacob 5).
- look for everything related to nature–notice plants, animals, references to weather, bodies of water, mountains, and anything outside (in the heavens and on the earth).
- notice gospel nature analogies– Find things in nature that remind you of our Heavenly Parents and Jesus Christ or a doctrine or principle of the gospel.
- think about holy places in nature–Many prophets throughout time have been commanded to go to the mountains to be with God. Find references where this happens and ponder why. Relate it to any experiences you have had in the mountains.
Family Study Ideas
Here are several easy ways to study “Come, Follow Me- For Individuals and Families” in your family study as NATURE (NATURALISTIC) learners.
- have a lesson outside –If the weather is nice, go outside in nature to teach your family.
- look for animals —Look for references to animals all throughout the scriptures. Try and understand why each type of animal was used for specific things.
- collect objects from nature–Gather items from nature to use as lesson props or lesson reminders you can display in your home. Use objects in nature to build or create visuals for your lesson. (Ex. build an ark from sticks found outside when learning about Noah).
- visit the temple grounds–Go to the temple as a family and have a lesson on the grass outside amongst the beautiful flowers and trees. If a temple isn’t close by, find a quiet spot in a nearby park to have a lesson.
- visit a historical site, museum, zoo, etc.– Go on a tour of a historical site or museum related to your lesson. If your lesson includes animals, visit the zoo or a farm or place where you can see that type of animal.
- plant seeds or plants— If your lesson talks about a specific type of plant or flower, try growing one as a family.
