Personal Study Ideas

Here are several easy ways to study “Come, Follow Me- For Individuals and Families” in your personal study as an NUMBERS (LOGICAL-MATHEMATICAL) learner.

  1. look for lists in your reading–There are lists all through scriptures. Find lists that if you do these things, then this will happen. (For example Doctrine and Covenants 20:37 lists the qualifications for baptism.)
  2. pay attention to sequences–There is sequential order all throughout the scriptures. Key words to pay attention to are: first, second, next, then, finally, last, etc.
  3. read the scriptures from front to back– reading the scriptures in order makes sense to number learners. Start at the beginning and read through the end of  a book of scripture.
  4. use a checklist to mark off chapters as you read–there are a lot of different Come, Follow Me Reading schedules available. Find your favorite to mark off each weekly reading assignment to track your progress.
  5. look for numbers in your reading–Numbers are all throughout the scriptures. Find numbers and then study the symbolism behind each number. (For example the number seven means complete, perfect, and whole. Think about the number seven in the creation story).
  6. use one color to mark words related to a specific topic–In your personal study, mark specific phrases or words that repeat in a specific color. In my scriptures, I mark all the names of the Godhead (Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost in the color purple–which is a sign of royalty).  Mark repeating phrases in one color throughout a chapter to see patterns.
  7. daily scripture thought— Listen to or read a daily thought about the week’s Come, Follow Me lesson. “One Minute Scripture Study” podcast and “One Minute Scripture Study in the Old Testament: A Daily Devotional Book for Latter-Day Saints” are great daily resources. “Don’t Miss This in the Old Testament: Exploring One Verse from (Almost) Every Chapter” is another great daily devotional book. They also share a daily thought on the “Don’t Miss This” App.

Family Study Ideas

Here are several easy ways to study “Come, Follow Me- For Individuals and Families” in your family study as  NUMBER (LOGICAL-MATHEMATICAL) learners.

  1. put a series of events in order – Using pictures or word cards, put an event in order. For example, have pictures to represent each day of creation and put them in order.
  2. use a timeline  — Create a timeline to show your family for the entire book of scripture you are reading. There are many timelines available for the Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants to aid in understanding.
  3. have a set schedule to teach CFM– Number learners really like order and schedules. Set specific days and times to study Come, Follow Me as a family and stick to it as much as possible (remember things always come up so be flexible).  There are many study planners available to map out your teaching plans for the week to help create order.
  4. use object lessons– Find relevant object lessons that illustrate a concept you are reading about that your family can relate to. There are a lot of gospel object lessons available on the website Funtastic Family Home Evenings.
  5. write out the genealogy– While reading about family lines, write out the names of fathers and mothers and sons and daughters to see family relationships.
  6. ask a lot of compare and contrast questions– Number learners like to look for relationships between different things. As a family,  could discuss how Abraham was a type of Jesus Christ.
  7. play a game as a family– Find games that teach concepts you learn about in the scriptures. For example, you can play “Chutes and Ladders” to teach about our journey on the covenant path–sometimes things are going great and sometimes we have problems and get to start all over again but we can all make it back to our Heavenly Parents.
  8. use science experiments— Science experiments can be analogies for life experiences. Do an experiment together and find ways to relate it to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
