Easy Tips and Ideas for Hands-on Learners (Kinesthetic) using “Come, Follow Me”

HANDS-ON LEARNER (Kinesthetic)

The HANDS-ON (KINESTHETIC) LEARNING STYLE or “body smart”– is the learning style that loves to move and be active. Hands on learners enjoy movement, dance, building things, tasting things, acting, exercise, and playing sports. They love role-playing and acting out scenarios. They collect objects that remind them of lessons they have learned. They are constantly on the move.

Personal Study Ideas

Here are several easy ways to study “Come, Follow Me- For Individuals and Families” in your personal study as a HANDS-ON (KINESTHETIC) learner.

  1. listen to the reading assignment while moving your body–Listen to the assigned scriptures while your body is doing something else like exercising, walking, folding laundry, or cleaning your house.
  2. display an object–Find a tangible item to display to remind you of the week’s lesson. For example, if you are studying the story of David and Goliath, find five smooth stones or a sling shot to display for the week.
  3. make a lesson reminder-– Make or build something that goes along with the weekly lesson. For example, if you are reading the story of Rahab, braid red yard or ribbon to make a scarlet cord. Hang the cord somewhere in your home where you will see it often.
  4. hold a pencil in your hand as you read–Having something in your hands you can play with as you read or study can help hands-on learners. Tapping the pencil or twirling it in your fingers can help you focus.
  5. chew gum or eat a snack while studying-Eating, chewing gum, or sucking on a hard candy while reading and studying can help hands-on learners use their senses.
  6. take periodic “brain Breaks” while studying–This helps your brain rest so you can focus again. Get up and walk around, do a little dance, draw a picture, go get the mail, or do a few chores before coming back to study

Family Study Ideas

Here are several easy ways to study “Come, Follow Me- For Individuals and Families” in your family study as HANDS-ON (KINESTHETIC) learners.

  1. act out stories- gather props and have your family members act out what is happening in the scriptures.
  2. build a lesson reminder together–  Create a model of something discussed in the scriptures you are reading. For example: make two brown paper bag trees to represent the two trees in the Garden of Eden. You can add leaves and fruit to the trees also (or build the trees out of Playdough). (LINK)
  3. eat a  snack — have a small snack that relates to your lesson can be a great way to involve your hands-on learners–especially because it involves all the senses (see, smell, touch, taste, and hear). An added bonus would be to prepare the snack or recipe together–more hands-on experience.
  4. play charades– acting out words for others to guess that relate to the lesson. For example, you could have family members act out the different things God created (animals, plants, trees, stars, light, dark, etc;)
  5. use object lessons – find object lessons that require your body or movement to teach  specific concepts. For example,  you could do the “Human Knot” (where your family stands in a circle and grab random hands across the circle and you need to untangle yourselves) to teach the importance of communication or family togetherness. Check out this website for a lot of gospel object lessons at Funtastic Family Home Evenings.
  6. give family members something to hold during the lesson–  Family members could hold pictures or objects that relate to the lesson.  While teaching about the creation, have pictures of each day of creation someone can hold up at the right time.
