Personal Study Ideas

Here are several easy ways to study “Come, Follow Me- For Individuals and Families” in your personal study as a VISUAL (SPACIAL-VISUAL) learner.

  1. use wide-margin scriptures – Use the space in the margins to write quotes in fancy lettering, write key words or phrases, attach stickers, add artwork, write thoughts, etc. Use a lot of color to make your notes your own. There are a lot of wide-margin scriptures available today for all books of scripture. Several options are mentioned in the resources section below.
  2. add color to the scriputures – Using a variety of colors, highlight words, phrases, favorite verses, etc. that stand out to you. You can use a specific color coding system if you want. Find a way to make your physical or digital scriptures appealing to you.
  3. use maps, graphs, and charts- Study the maps of locations you are reading in the scriptures for greater understanding. Make charts or graphs to compare different information you are reading about in the scriptures so you can visually see what is being taught.
  4. learn about color symbolism– Different colors evoke different emotions. Study the psychology of color or the symbolism of color in the scriptures. For example, white means purity, cleanliness, righteousness, holiness, light, and so much more. Find colors in the scriptures as you read.
  5. add color to a scripture journal–Have a scripture journal where you can record thoughts, impressions, and things you are learning. Add a lot of color to your journal. You could draw pictures or doodles or use creative lettering to write words and phrases.
  6. add colorful tip-ins– Glue small versions of artwork or quotes into the spine of your scriptures called tip-ins. These “additional” pages can add additional information to the scriptures you are reading.

Family Study Ideas

Here are several easy ways to study “Come, Follow Me- For Individuals and Families” in your family study as VISUAL (SPACIAL-VISUAL) learners.

  1. display weekly artword – The “Come, Follow Me–For Individuals and Families” manual has a weekly piece of artwork. Buy an extra book, cut out the pictures, and display a new picture each week. There are a few paid resources available as well (linked on my blog).
  2. illustrate a scripture story-  While one person reads the scripture story, the rest of the family can draw their own illustrations for the story. You can also color pictures of the story.
  3. watch videos of scripture stories There are a lot of scripture story videos available on churchofjesuschrist.org for all books of scripture. Watch the video first so everyone can visually see what happens in a story before reading it in the scriptures.
  4. find a Bible timeline to display– Visually seeing a timeline (especially a timeline of pictures) of when events occurred in relation to other events really helps visual learners understand better.
  5. use lots of visuals for lesson–Use as many visuals as you can while teaching a lesson. Use pictures, word cards, printable quotes, scripture reference cards, etc. to help visual learners see things (so they remember things).
  6. display words and quotes at home– Displaying quotes or scriptures for the week helps visual learners remember what they have read. Place reminders where they will be seen frequently (ex. on mirrors, bookshelves, on the table, on the wall, in the car, etc.
