INDEPENDENT LEARNER (Intrapersonal)
The SOCIAL (INTERPERSONAL) LEARNING STYLE or “people smart”– is the learning style that thrives on being with and learning with others. Social learners enjoy talking with others, learning from others, and working together with others. They love teaching lessons and sharing their thoughts and feelings with others. They love attending classes especially when they can interact with the teacher and classmates.
Personal Study Ideas
Here are several easy ways to study “Come, Follow Me- For Individuals and Families” in your personal study as an INDEPENDENT (INTRAPERSONAL) learner.
- write your answer to each question–There are so many wonderful reflection questions in the “Come, Follow Me manual, keep a journal of your personal answers and applications.
- set aside time to ponder the weekly reading assignments—find a quiet spot to just sit and think all by yourself.
- set a goal to study the Old Testament– be specific on how often you want to study. Make a reminder where you can see it often or use a checklist to track your reading.
- create a quiet study space—gather your scriptures, manuals, journals, pens, etc. into one location for your daily study
- read the scriptures slowly—take time to think and ponder what you are reading and find ways to apply it to your own life
- remember it’s ok not to share–—don’t feel guilty for not sharing your personal thoughts and feeling with others about the things you are learning. It’s ok to keep them personal and to yourself.
- listen to a podcast– podcasts are perfect for independent learners because you can just listen and learn from others.
Family Study Ideas
Here are several easy ways to study “Come, Follow Me- For Individuals and Families” in your family study as INDEPENDENT (INTRAPERSONAL) learners.
- silently read passages as a family—instead of reading out loud, give every a few minutes to read several verses and write down what they learned. You could then quickly share your responses.
- encourage each family member to replace names of people with their own name— Encourage each family member to replace the names of people in the scriptures with their own name. This will help everyone learn to apply the stories and teachings to themselves. You could ask questions like “How are you like Moses?” or “What similarities do you have with Eve?”
- give everyone their own study journal– or study sheets for independent study where each family member can record the things they are learning personally and how each reading relates to their personal life. There are a lot of study journals available. Below you will find a list of some of my favorites.
- share what you learned with one person—Assign each member of your family one person to share what they learned and what they are going to do because of what they read.
- allow everyone to read on their own—let everyone go read for a few minutes on their own in a special spot and then have everyone return and report on what they read
- allow family members to pass on sharing their feelings—independent learners usually like to keep personal thoughts and feelings to themselves. Don’t force people to share.
